# Privacy Policy for Purity Quest
**Effective date:** July/8/2027
Purity Quest ("the app," "we," "our") is built around a simple principle: your recovery
journey is yours alone. This policy explains, plainly, what happens to your information.
## The short version
**We do not collect, see, store, or share any of your personal data.** Everything you enter
into Purity Quest — your name, your journal entries, your streak history, your slip logs,
your letters to your future self — stays on your device. There is no account to create, no
server we send it to, and no way for us to see it even if we wanted to. The one exception is a
one-way, automatic download that keeps the website blocklist current — explained in full
below, under "Keeping the blocklist current." It never sends any of your data anywhere; it
only downloads a public list.
## What information the app handles, and where it lives
Purity Quest stores the following information **only on your device**, using your phone's
local app storage:
- Your name and selected faith/religion (entered during setup)
- Your streak, level, XP, and score
- Journal entries and mood logs
- Slip logs, including any URL and trigger notes you choose to record
- Letters you write to your future self
- Notification preferences (reminder times, which reminders are enabled)
- Your theme preference (light/dark/system)
- Focus session history (which apps you chose to avoid and for how long)
- Whether the website blocker (see below) is turned on, and any custom website
addresses or IP addresses you've added to your personal blocklist
- Whether App Lock (biometric/passcode) is turned on
- Whether "show a quote when blocked" is turned on
- Quote reminder settings — the times you've set, whether each one is random, chosen
from our list, or written by you, and the text of any quote you write yourself
- Which lessons in the Learn tab you've marked complete
- Whether Lockdown mode is turned on (see below)
- Your if-then plans — the triggers and actions you write for yourself (see below)
- Which app(s) you most recently chose to avoid in a focus session, so the Panic Mode button
on Home can quickly start a matching session without you having to pick again
None of this is transmitted to us, to any server, or to any third party. We have no backend
database and no way to access this information. If you uninstall the app, this data is
deleted along with it, since it was never stored anywhere else.
## The website blocker (local VPN)
Purity Quest includes an optional feature that blocks access to a list of known adult
websites, directly on your device. Turning it on requires granting Android's VPN permission
— here is exactly what that does and does not mean:
- The app creates a **local-only VPN connection**. Your regular internet traffic is not
routed through any server of ours, or anyone else's — it continues exactly as normal.
- The only thing the VPN inspects is **DNS lookups** — the request your phone makes to
translate a website name (like "example.com") into an address. The app checks that name
against a list of known adult and proxy/"unblocker" domains bundled inside the app itself.
- If the name matches, the lookup is blocked and the site fails to load. If it does not
match, the request is forwarded to a public DNS resolver (Google Public DNS) to resolve
normally — the same way your phone would resolve it with this feature turned off.
- **No browsing history, DNS query, or blocklist match is logged, stored, or sent anywhere.**
That filtering decision happens in memory, on your device, in real time. Nothing about
which sites you visited or attempted to visit is recorded by the app or by us.
- You can turn this feature off at any time from the Focus tab, which also removes the VPN
connection from your device.
- You can add your own website addresses or IP addresses to block, on top of our built-in
list, with no limit on how many. **This custom list is stored only on your device and is
never sent to us, seen by us, or shared with any other user of the app** — it's private to
you. Likewise, you never see the built-in list itself; you only ever see and manage sites
you've personally added.
- If you turn on "show a quote when blocked," the app shows a local notification with a quote
from your chosen faith the moment a site is blocked. This uses only the religion you
selected during setup and quotes bundled inside the app — nothing is sent anywhere to
generate it, and no record of which site triggered it is kept.
## Keeping the blocklist current
The built-in adult-site blocklist is bundled with the app, but new sites appear constantly, so
Purity Quest also checks for updates from two well-known, actively-maintained, open-source
blocklist projects — the same kind of public lists used by tools like Pi-hole:
- [StevenBlack/hosts](<https://github.com/StevenBlack/hosts>) (~76,000 domains)
- [The Block List Project](<https://github.com/blocklistproject/Lists>) (~928,000 domains)
Here's exactly what that means:
- This is a **one-way download of public lists of domain names** — nothing about you, your
device, or your usage is sent to make this request. It is not a backend of ours; the app
talks directly to the same public files anyone could download themselves.
- Each list checks for an update **at most once a day**, only downloading if it's actually
stale. If your phone has no internet connection, or a check fails for any reason, the app
silently keeps using whatever list it already has — blocking never stops working because of
this.
- Because The Block List Project's list is much larger (roughly 25–35MB to download), it is
**only ever fetched when your phone is connected to Wi-Fi**, so it never uses your cellular
data. The smaller StevenBlack list can update over any connection.
- Like visiting any website, these downloads reveal your device's IP address to GitHub's
servers, the same way loading any web page would. No account, name, or identifying
information from within the app is included in the request.
- Both downloaded lists are combined with the built-in list and your own custom sites entirely
on your device, and stored only there.
- Turning the website blocker on or off may take a few seconds rather than feel instant, since
the full combined list (which can be close to a million domains) has to be handed to the
on-device filter.
## Real app blocking (Accessibility service)
Focus sessions can optionally use Android's Accessibility service to actually block the apps
you choose to avoid (Instagram, TikTok, etc.), instead of relying on the honor system alone.
This is a separate, optional permission from the ones above, and here is exactly what it does:
- The service only ever checks **which app is currently in front** (its package name) — it
has no access to, and never requests access to, what's displayed on your screen, any text,
images, or content within any app.
- This check only happens **while you have an active focus session running**. Outside of an
active session, the check for a blocked app is never true, so nothing is ever acted on.
- If a blocked app comes to the foreground during an active session, the app sends you back
to your home screen and opens a Purity Quest reminder screen. Nothing about this event is
logged, stored, or sent anywhere — it's a real-time, in-memory check, on your device.
- This permission is enabled and disabled entirely through Android's own Accessibility
settings screen — Purity Quest can link you to that screen but cannot turn the permission on
itself, and you can revoke it there at any time. Every other feature works normally without it.
- You're not limited to a fixed list — you can choose **any app installed on your phone** to
add to your personal list of apps to avoid. To read the names of your installed apps for
this picker, the app asks Android for your list of installed apps (a standard Android
capability, not a special permission) — it only reads app names and package identifiers to
show you a searchable list, never anything about how you use them. Your personal list of
chosen apps is stored only on your device, like everything else in this app.
- **Your phone/calling app can never be selected or blocked**, by design — it's automatically
excluded from the picker and from blocking, regardless of what you choose, so a focus session
can never interfere with your ability to make or receive calls.
## Lockdown mode
Lockdown mode is a stricter version of the website blocker, for moments you don't trust your
future self to make the right call. Turning it on requires typing a confirmation phrase after
reading a clear warning, and once it's on, the website blocker cannot be turned off from
inside the app again through any screen or setting. We only store whether this is turned on —
nothing else changes about how the blocker itself works or what it logs (still nothing).
## Panic Mode
The "I'm feeling the urge" button on Home can, in one tap, turn on the website blocker (if it
isn't already on) and start a short focus session using whichever apps you most recently chose
to avoid — so you don't have to make several decisions in a difficult moment. It only uses
information already described elsewhere in this policy (your last app selection, your
blocklist) and doesn't introduce any new data collection.
## If-then plans
You can write your own "if this happens, then I will do this" plans — for example, "if I feel
bored at night, then I will go for a walk." These are shown to you in the urge helper on Home
instead of (or alongside) a quote. The triggers and actions you write are stored only on your
device, like everything else in this app, and are never sent anywhere.
## Recovery Wrapped
The Stats tab includes a "Recovery Wrapped" summary of your own progress (streak, XP, badges,
lessons completed, and so on), built entirely from data already described in this policy. If
you choose to tap "Share," your phone's own share menu opens and you pick where that summary
text goes (a messaging app, etc.) — that sharing is entirely your choice and destination; the
app itself never sends this anywhere on its own.
## App Lock
Purity Quest has an optional App Lock feature that requires your fingerprint, face, or device
passcode to open the app. This works entirely through your phone's own operating system: the
app asks Android "is this the device owner?" and gets a yes/no answer back. **Your fingerprint
or face data is never accessed, seen, or stored by Purity Quest** — it's handled completely by
your device's built-in security system, the same way it is when you unlock your phone itself.
We only store whether this feature is turned on.
## Quote reminders
You can set up to 10 daily notifications with a quote from your chosen faith, at any times you
pick. For each one, you choose whether it's a random quote from your faith, one you pick from
our list of 50, or one you write yourself. All of this — the times, your choices, and any text
you write — is scheduled as a local notification and stored only on your device, like
everything else in this app.
## Notifications
The app can send you local reminders (e.g. a daily streak reminder, a weekly recap, milestone
celebrations). These notifications are scheduled directly on your device and are never routed
through a push notification server operated by us or anyone else.
## Analytics, ads, and third parties
Purity Quest contains **no analytics SDKs, no advertising, no crash reporting services, and no
third-party trackers.** We do not know how often you use the app, what you write in it, or
anything else about your usage.
## Data deletion
Because nothing is stored outside your device, there is no separate deletion request process.
Uninstalling the app removes all associated data. If a future version of the app adds optional
cloud sync or accounts, this policy will be updated first, and that feature will be opt-in.
## Children's privacy
Purity Quest addresses topics related to pornography use and recovery and is intended for
users aged 17 and older. It is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect
information from children, consistent with the fact that we do not collect information from
anyone.
## Changes to this policy
If this policy changes — for example, if a future version of the app adds features that do
involve data leaving your device — we will update this page and adjust the app's description
accordingly before that feature ships.
